This free font by Helsingin Sanomat helps visualize the urgency of the climate crisis – as the years progress, the font weight gets lighter and lighter, until it almost disappears. While not being particularly useful as a typeface, I was drawn to this “thought experiment” because it combines two interests of mine: design and the climate crisis. I like the connection that this type makes to the past data and expected trends of arctic ice, which results in an ugly shrinking typeface. But wouldn’t it be even uglier to lose our planet’s vital ice cover?
